Ryan Atkinson

I’m an award-winning hostile environments trained wildlife cameraman, focussing on the documentary areas of wildlife; science; climate & human interest; and adventure programming. As a documentary lighting cameraman based in London and coming from a diverse background of drama and commercials through to wildlife and expedition filming, I work as director of photography across multiple genres of specialist factual filmmaking. With a degree in documentary photography, a highly trained photographic eye and proven technical competency, I film the crossover between the natural world and people, specialising in covering stories of positive engagement across species and geographic boundaries. Core skills include long lens, sync, gimbal, and aerial photography. A particular specialist in expedition and mountain camerawork, and working in extreme environments, I also regularly work in more down-to-earth settings and have broad experience ranging from long lens blue-chip wildlife behaviour sequences, all the way through to sync specialist factual, commercials and drama. Wildlife credit highlights include shows such as the Emmy award-winning Our Planet, BAFTA winning Planet Earth II, One Strange Rock, Perfect Planet and The Hunt. Science programming includes Sky At Night, The One Show, Horizon, Expedition Volcano and The Molecule That Made Us, and I regularly work for all of the major broadcasters. I have worked under all climatic conditions across high altitude, desert, rainforest, savannah, coastal, shallow seas, open ocean and arctic environments filming animals and people; big and large; friendly and fierce; for the advancement of science and conservation around the globe. Though I’m a wildlife and adventure cameraman London and Cardiff based, I work across the UK and abroad.
